Solutions to today's energy and environmental policy conflicts can be found through adequate regulation and boundary conditions of energy markets, financial incentives and soft policy measures (e.g. professional training) for innovation, accelerated diffusion of energy-efficient technologies and the use of renewable energies. We view a sustainable industrial society as one that makes careful and intelligent use of its resources. A central strategy for solving an increasing number of energy policy conflicts also includes a reorientation of research and technology policy not just towards technological innovations but also towards cost reductions for energy- efficient technologies and the utilization of renewable energy sources. Efficient use of energy improves not only the competitive position of energy-intensive industrial branches, but - more importantly for European countries - also increases the export prospects of technology producers and energy service companies. Finally, more efficient use of energy significantly supports the creation of new jobs by substituting imported energies by domestically produced goods and services. The research group shares and supports the long-term vision of a 2000 Watt per capita industrial society formulated by the Swiss Institutes of Technology in 1998.
