Thunderbird can have problems with attachments coming from accounts on ETH's Exchange mail server. This results in incompletely downloaded attachments that, as a consequence, cannot be used.

The procedure described below should resolve these problems.

1) Start Thunderbird.
2a) In OSX: Select "Advanced" in Thunderbird's Preferences.
2b) In Windows: Select Tools / Options / Advanced.
3) Click the button "Config Editor". Take the note seriously and confirm.
4) In the filter edit box, enter mail.server.default.fetch_by_chunks
5) Double click the remaining entry. This will set the Value from True to False.
6) Close all windows and restart Thunderbird.

PLEASE NOTE:
Before or after the procedure described above, check whether the option "Keep messages for this account on this computer" is selected in the Account Settings under "Synchronization & Storage". If it was selected, you will have to re-receive mails with incomplete/corrupt attachments. You can do that by forwarding these mails to yourself using the Web interface on mail.ethz.ch/owa.
