Use printers from private laptops

Windows 7

Install network printer under Windows 7 on private notebook:
1. Device and Printers
2. Add printer
3. Add a network, wireless…
4.The printer wasn’t listed…
5. Add a printer using a TCP/IP…
6. Hostname or IP address
7. Xerox Work Centre 5638:  172.31.11.63
8. HP Color Laserjet 4600 172.31.11.61

In the list of manufacturers of the printer's drivers, you may not find the printer's model. Use the button "Windows Update" to update the list.

If Windows 7 x64-Version -> Download x64 driver for Xerox Work Centre (search for Xerox Work Centre 5638 driver).

Linux, Gnome Desktop Environment (Ubuntu)

1. Finding the printer server and choosing a printer

On an older version of Ubuntu, I could just click: system->administration->printing, then choose 'new'. In the opening window, choose 'Network Printer' and there 'windows printer via SAMBA'. By browsing in the domain 'D' one could find the server mavtprt3, and on this the printers.

Nowadays, after choosing 'windows printer via SAMBA', I have to enter

(smb://)D/mavtprt3/ 

(DO NOT FORGET THE FINAL SLASH ...001/!) and then click 'Browse...' (enter credentials as prompted, domain must be D) to find the printers provided by the server mavtprt3. Choose the printer of your dreams and click 'OK'.

2. Installing the printer

To make your life easier, check the 'set authentication details now' box and enter

d\<your_eth_ID>

(yes, it's a backslash...) in the 'username' field and your ETH password in the password field. Proceed with 'OK'. You will be presented with a list of printer manufacturers. Choose the appropriate one and then find the specific model in a next list. In a third list you are given the choice of drivers for the printer model you chose to install. If you chose a printer that had 'PS' or 'PCL' in his name in the first step, you might want to choose a 'PS' or a 'PCL' driver to go along with it.

Ubuntu usually recommends a PostScript 'PS' driver, and thus I try to choose 'PS' versions of the printers in the first step if available.
